Music Users

Ready for Every Imaginable Use of Musical Works

JASRAC grants license with simple procedures and appropriate fees, for every possible form of copyright use including performances as in concerts, karaoke, airwave and cable broadcasting; CDs, records, tapes and other recorded media; audiovisual media such as DVDs, video tapes and films; published materials such as sheet music and lyric collections; CD rental; and interactive transmissions such as music download/streaming services.  

Performances at Concerts and Events

The organizer of concerts and events are responsible for copyright clearance applications.  
Please note that according to the Japanese Copyright Law (Article 38 paragraph (1)), JASRAC does not collect royalties in case the performance is (1) non-profit making purpose, (2) no admission is charged, and (3) no remuneration is paid to the performers.

Performances at Premises

The owners of places of entertainment where singing and performances take place are responsible for copyright clearance applications.

Licensed premises are required to display stickers indicating their license status near the entrance of the premises.

Publication

Songbooks, collection of lyrics, sheet music, general publications, concert programs, newspapers, magazines, monuments, panels, posters, etc.  
Please note that authorization of right holders shall be required to use musical works for goods and for the purpose of advertising.  In case of copying music sheets that have already been published, authorization of the publisher is necessary.

Recordings

CDs, vinyl records, tapes, melody IC chips, music boxes, etc.  
Please note that authorization for neighboring rights (related rights) is also required to use the sound recordings such as CDs, DVDs from producers of sound recordings.

Videograms

Recording for videotapes, DVDs, software, etc.  
Copyright clearance is required not only for musical works used in the commercial product, but also for musical works included in promotional and company training videos, and for the production and distribution of commemorative video recordings of amateur concerts.  
Please note that authorization for neighboring rights (related rights) is also required to use the sound recordings such as CDs, DVDs from right owners of sound recordings.  
In addition, videos shown at hotels, department stores, public means of transportation, and exhibitions, require a separate license for "showing of videograms."

Recording of theme and inserted songs or background music in theatrical films.  
Exhibition of a film.

In general, broadcasters are responsible for copyright clearance applications.

*  Fees for broadcasts of works in commercials
In accordance with Article 2 "Broadcasting, etc." of JASRAC’s Tariffs, under the comprehensive licensing agreements for terrestrial broadcasting which are concluded with each member of The Japan Commercial Broadcasters Association, the fees for broadcasts of works in commercials shall be paid separately, not by each contracting broadcaster, but by the advertisers (sponsors, advertising agencies).
