Use of Music in the Metaverse

There has been an increasing number of inquiries about the use of music in the 3D virtual world (metaverse), such as in a virtual live performance.

The Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (JASRAC) grants licenses to those wishing to use, in the metaverse, any of the music that is managed by JASRAC in the same manner as the use of music on the Internet.

Specific example (*)

● Performance of a virtual live concert in the metaverse

The license is granted pursuant to the provisions for Video Transmission.

Example of the royalty for streaming a virtual live performance for a price 2.1% of the monthly revenue, including information fees and advertising and/or other revenues
(Minimum royalty: 5,000 yen)

Use of foreign repertoire in the transmission of video recordings or archive recordings requires a separate license to be granted for Videogram Recordings.

● Use of Background Music in stores in the metaverse

The license is granted pursuant to the provisions for Music Transmission.

Example of the royalty for streaming background music in a service in which you earn revenue from ads and sale of avatar items

3.5% of the monthly revenue, including information fees and advertising and/or other revenues
(Minimum royalty: 5,000 yen)

In addition to the above, JASRAC also grants licenses for various cases of music use in the metaverse, including games, music video transmission, and karaoke transmission. Please contact the relevant department for more information.

JASRAC is working towards improving an environment that allows for appropriate licensing of music use in Web3, including the metaverse, and towards promoting measures that enable music creators to obtain appropriate compensation.

* In the case where the metaverse platform operator obtains the license.
