On March 14, 2022, the Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (JASRAC) distributed copyright royalties to rights holders including authors, composers, and music publishers for the 2022-03 period. The amount distributed for the relevant period was 32,985,879,534 JPY, which is 98.4% compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year. (Administrative expenses, income tax etc. are deducted from this amount.)

As a result, the amount distributed in fiscal 2021 (cumulative amount for 2021-06, -09, -12 and 2022-03 distribution periods) was finalized, which was 115,972,057,244 JPY. This is 96.1% compared to the amount for fiscal 2020 and primarily reflects royalty income in the second half of fiscal 2020 (October 2020 to March 2021) and the first half of fiscal 2021 (April to September 2021). The amount was the third largest in the history of JASRAC.

Major live concerts, etc. Due to COVID-19, the amount distributed was approximately 3.59 billion JPY (69.7% of the previous fiscal year) as the number of performances was reduced and as performances were scaled down by limiting audiences.

Closures and temporary closures of premises caused by COVID-19 resulted in distribution of approximately 9.30 billion JPY (85.5% of the previous fiscal year).

＜Broadcasts, etc.＞
Distribution was approximately 29.56 billion JPY (94.2% of the previous fiscal year) as the effect of the decrease in the amount collected for fiscal 2021, resulting from broadcasters' diminished revenues for fiscal 2020, began to appear from distribution 2021-12.

＜Interactive transmissions＞
Subscription service and online video service markets maintained their strength, resulting in distribution of approximately 35.62 billion JPY (107.1% of the previous fiscal year).

The number of works subject to distribution in fiscal 2021 was 2,826,076 works. Rights holders who are entitled to receive royalties, including distribution through music publishers, amount to 76,252 writers and 2,895 music publishers. Furthermore, royalties are distributed to 383,105 writers and 48,318 music publishers through 117 foreign sister societies.

JASRAC will continue to strive for the development of the music industry and music culture by returning to creators and rights holders the compensation they deserve.
