JASRAC Concludes Administration Services Agreement with Muserk LLC,
Regarding the Collection of Mechanical Royalties on YouTube in the United States

Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (JASRAC) has concluded an administration services agreement with the US copyright management company, Muserk LLC, regarding the collection of mechanical royalties (*) on YouTube in the United States. It will be applied back to the usage in 2018.

Muserk LLC is a US copyright management company specializing in mechanical rights management for online distribution use and has a past record of concluding similar administration services agreement with multiple CISAC member societies in Europe. According to the agreement, if JASRAC's domestic repertoire are used on YouTube in the United States, Muserk LLC will license and collect royalties for mechanical rights. JASRAC will distribute the royalties transferred from Muserk LLC to the right holders (authors, composers, music publishers, etc.) of each work.

Based on the representation agreements with CMOs (copyright management organizations) around the world, JASRAC's domestic repertoire are managed overseas by the CMOs. Previously, JASRAC has concluded a representation agreement with Harry Fox Agency Inc. (HFA) regarding the management of mechanical rights in the United States for recording use such as CDs, and some online distribution use in the United States. With the addition of the agreement with Muserk LLC, we expect to enhance the management of works used by online distribution in United States and increase the amount of royalties.

JASRAC will continue to support the overseas expansion of music by cooperating with copyright management organizations around the world and will strive for the development of the music industry and music culture through the distribution of remuneration back to creators and rightsholders.

* For using copyrighted works for online distribution, performing rights and mechanical rights are extended. JASRAC has concluded representation agreements for performing rights with ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC.
