JASRAC
Japanese Society for Rights of
Authors, Composers and Publishers
MUSICAL COPYRIGHT ADMINISTRATION SOCIETY AND
RECORDING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION JOINTLY VERIFIES
THE VALIDITY OF DIGITAL WATERMARK TECHNOLOGY
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE WORLD
The Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (hereinafter
referred to as JASRAC) and the Recording Industry Association of Japan
(hereinafter referred to as RIAJ) conducted an experiment to confirm
the validity of digital watermark technology and have recently verified its validity.
It is the first time in the world that a copyright administration society and
a recording industry association jointly conducted a verification experiment.
Digital watermark technology has been expected to contribute to the following
in the field of copyright administration and such
(1) Embedding information on the administration of rights and its utilization
(2) Discovery of illegal usage
However, its validity had never been actually confirmed between the right-owners,
and the only confirmation conducted publicly had been STEP, the benchmark test
of digital watermark technology conducted by JASRAC in the years 2000 and 2001.
It has already been confirmed in STEP that the currently existing digital watermark
technology has enough quality to withstand practical use, but its validity as
a definite business model had not been confirmed.
In light of the above, JASRAC and RIAJ conducted the following two experiments
with the purpose of confirming what specific effects future spreading and development
of digital watermark technology will bring to the field of copyright administration
and such:
(1) Experiment to grasp the actual state of broadcasting usages of sound sources
from compact discs
(2) Experiment to find illegal usage on the Internet
Each experiment has been a success, and it has been confirmed that digital watermark
technology could be effectively used in the field of copyright administration
and such. For details on each experiment, please refer to the respective press
releases, which have been distributed with this release.
Both societies have confirmed to continue to make efforts for the promotion of
the spreading and usage of digital watermark technology.
