Press Conference Held on “Resale Rights” to Protect Original Works of Art

On April, 13, 2018, the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) held a press conference requesting the implementation of Resale Rights (*) in Japan, and representatives including Kazuhiko Fukuoji, Chairman of the Japanese Society for Protecting Artists' Rights (JASPAR), and Chinami Nakajima, Chairman of Japan Art, Photograph and Graphic Art Copyright Organization (APG-Japan), attended. JASRAC is supporting this activity as a board member of CISAC, and President Michio Asaishi also attended the press conference.

In the press conference, Gadi Oron, Director General of CISAC, and Benjamin Ng, Regional Director for CISAC Asia-Pacific, explained the law systems in other countries. Also, creators including Chairman Fukuoji demanded the protection of the interests of artists through the Resale Rights system.

(*) The right to receive fair remuneration from the selling price whenever the artist’s work is resold. The Resale Rights provision is also stipulated in the Berne Convention which is a global convention on copyright.
