JASRAC Files Petition for Civil Conciliation against 151 Beauty Salon
and Restaurant Business Operators that Use Background Music

On June 2018, JASRAC filed a petition for civil conciliation against 166 facilities of 151 business operators across the country, which have not completed procedures for copyright clearance even though they are using background music (hereafter “BGM”). This is the first time JASRAC has filed a petition for civil conciliation for using BGM in Kochi and Kagoshima Prefectures.

< Breakdown by type of business >
Beauty Salons: 73 facilities of 66 business operators
Restaurants: 75 facilities of 71 business operators
Others: 18 facilities of 14 business operators

All of these operators have been using musical works administered by JASRAC as BGM in their business without authorization despite JASRAC’s repeated notices. Therefore, JASRAC filed a petition for civil conciliation against those operators.

JASRAC has widely disseminated information on the necessity to obtain copyright licenses for the use of BGM through its website and various media. JASRAC will continue to provide guidance to music users and also develop cooperative relations with industry organizations and BGM providers, and work to accelerate various activities to promote legitimate use of BGM.
