Through its signing of the Berne Convention and the Universal Copyright Convention, as well as membership
in international bodies such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), Japan enjoys a mutual copyright protection relationship
with almost every country on the planet. Under the umbrella of these agreements, JASRAC has reciprocal representation agreements
with 117 copyright societies covering 88 countries and 4 territories (H.K., Taiwan, French New Caledonia,
Macau) around the world.

JASRAC belongs to the two major international organizations representing copyright societies: CISAC (International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers NGO representing author's societies in 118 countries) and BIEM (International Bureau of Societies Administering the Recording and Mechanical Reproduction Rights global organization representing mechanical rights societies). Serving as a member of the Board of Directors of CISAC and as a member of the Management Committee of BIEM, JASRAC plays an important role in the protection and administration of copyrights on the global stage. Within CISAC there are many committees that are devoted to coordinating and harmonizing various aspects of inter-society administration, and JASRAC is an active participant on the Distribution Technical Committee, Radio and Television, Broadcasting Technical Committee and other groups that help to establish global standards.

|

JASRAC played a central roll in the activities of the Asia-Pacific
Committee when it was created in 1982, and continues to make contributions to
the Committee and to the improvement of copyright protection throughout the region.
JASRAC, through the Committee, provides financial support to copyright societies
in countries where infrastructure and systems for copyright administration are
lagging behind global standards. JASRAC also dispatches lecturers to seminars
and symposiums conducted by international organizations such as WIPO aimed at
personnel from local administration societies and concerned government bodies.Furthermore,
JASRAC receives trainees from overseas organizations and provides them with practical
training in copyright administration.
In response to the unprecedented success enjoyed by Japanese musical works in
Asia in recent years, JASRAC has implemented a wide range of concrete measures
including steps to reinforce copyright administration policy in this region; anti-piracy
measures in coordination with governmental bodies and related organizations; and
strengthening relationships with the copyright administration societies in the
large markets for JASRAC-administered works such as China, Taiwan and Korea. |
